AZ Lawmaker: Faculty, Students Should Carry Guns On Campus

Saying everyone but criminals will be safer, a veteran legislator wants to let qualified faculty carry guns on university and community college campuses.

Sen. Jack Harper, R-Surprise, said Wednesday there has been a history of situations where someone with a grudge comes onto a campus, goes into a classroom and starts shooting. He said the current prohibition against weapons on campus – one which the criminal has ignored – leaves the teacher and student defenseless.

But Harper isn’t stopping with arming the faculty. He is crafting a separate measure to allow students with certain training to also arm themselves.

Not everyone would be eligible. Harper’s legislation would limit the right to those who have obtained a state-issued permit to carry a concealed weapon.-[source]

SAF ASKS FOR JUDGMENT IN N.J. LAWSUIT

The Second Amendment Foundation and the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs have filed a motion for summary judgment in their federal lawsuit that challenges New Jersey handgun carry laws.

SAF and ANJRPC filed the lawsuit last month in federal district court in New Jersey. If this motion is granted, see there could be action on the case early in 2011.

“We’re challenging New Jersey’s unconscionable law that forces citizens to demonstrate some absurd ‘justifiable need’ in order to exercise a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, dosage ” said SAF Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb. “The way Garden State officials consistently abuse their authority to deny handgun licenses under existing statute is simply unconstitutional, and our case will prove that.”-[source]

Feds Seek To Implement Unconstitutional Power & Gun Grab

The Obama administration just can’t stop blaming the Second Amendment for violence perpetrated by Mexican drug cartels.

In the latest brazen attempt to circumvent the Constitution, information pills Obama and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) are seeking to implement rules that will subject American gun dealers to even more onerous paperwork requirements.

A new proposed rule will, for the first time, establish the precedent that licensed firearms dealers will be required (by administrative fiat) to report to the government the sale of two or more semi-automatic rifles that are .22 caliber or greater, can accept a detachable magazine, and are purchased by the same person within five business days.

In a move that bypasses the elected representatives of the people (the Congress), the new rules could be instituted by regulatory fiat as quickly as January 5, 2011.-[source]

CA:Businesses Welcome Openly Carried Firearms

Unless you don’t have a computer you know that Starbucks welcomes customers who openly carry firearms (Open Carry), despite a failed campaign from the Brady Campaign to force them to change their policy.

Thanks in part to the publicity the Brady Campaign gave to the South Bay Open Carry movement by protesting an Open Carry dinner at Domenick’s Pizza House last month, businesses have been contacting Harley Green, the founder of the Open Carry movement in the South Bay letting him know that they too support our right to openly carry guns for the purpose of self-defense.

My favorite quote is from Scott Osborn Osborn’s Automotive located at 1001 S. Pacific Coast Hwy in Redondo Beach, CA 90277

“You don’t need to check your guns at my business, wear them proudly!”-[source]

Rehberg Takes Aim At New ATF Firearm Sales Reporting Rules

Montana’s Congressman, pill Denny Rehberg, story today released the following statement critical of a proposed “emergency rule” by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to require federally licensed firearms retailers to report multiple sales of semi-automatic rifles. The proposed rule was included in today’s Federal Register and specifically calls for firearm retailers to report multiple sales, or other dispositions, of two or more .22 caliber or larger semi-automatic rifles that are capable of accepting a detachable magazine and are purchased by the same individual within five consecutive business days.

“While we’ve managed to stop gun control efforts in Congress, the Obama Administration wants to circumvent the legislative process altogether in order to force its anti-gun policies on the American people.  Beyond the economic burden of more paperwork for gun dealers, this rule is predicated on the incorrect assumption that buying multiple guns is a questionable activity that warrants a red flag for government attention.  This is the exact mindset that proponents of the Second Amendment feared when an anti-gun Chicago politician moved into the White House.  I’ll keep fighting to make sure the federal government respects all of our Constitutional rights.”-[source]

BATFE & “Emergency Authority” To Track Semi-Auto Rifle Sales

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has proposed that it be given emergency authority for six months, beginning January 5, to require about 8,500 firearms dealers along the border with Mexico “to alert authorities when they sell within five consecutive business days two or more semiautomatic rifles greater than .22 caliber with detachable magazines.”  A Washington Post story reporting on the BATFE proposal described that definition as being applicable to “so-called assault weapons,” but it would also apply to many rifles that have never been labeled with that term.

The reporting requirement will apparently be imposed under the “authority” the BATFE has used in the past to demand reporting of other types of transactions from certain limited groups of dealers over the past 10 years, but the new proposal is far broader than any previous use of this authority.  Of course, there’s no law today that prevents dealers from reporting suspicious transactions (or attempted transactions) to the BATFE, and dealers often do so. The BATFE is also free to inspect dealers’ sales records—either for annual compliance inspections or during a criminal investigation.-[source]

Former Owner, Officials Rally To Replace Bushmaster

With Bushmaster Firearm’s sudden announcement last week that it will close March 31 and lay off 73 employees in the process, the property’s owner, state and local leaders are scrambling to replace one of Windham’s best-known and most successful companies.

Dick Dyke, the former owner of Bushmaster who bought it out of bankruptcy in 1976 from a Bangor start-up and grew it into one of the most successful and recognizable military and civilian gun makers, is working behind the scenes this week with local legislators and the governor’s office. The group hopes to either find new employment for Bushmaster’s employees or bring another company into the 60,000-square-foot facility located in Dyke’s Windham Business Park, off Route 302 in North Windham.-[source]

Giving A Firearm As A Gift? Some Reminders From NSSF

The holidays are just around the corner.  As hunters, more about shooters, price collectors or just plain plinkers, information pills it’s a natural instinct to want to share our enjoyment of firearms with others.  What better way to do that than to make a gift of a firearm to a family member, close friend or relative?

The first thing to remember if you’re thinking about giving someone a gun is that . . . it’s a gun!  You already know that ownership of a firearm brings with it some serious legal and ethical obligations that other consumer products don’t.  So let’s look at some questions you may have about giving a firearm as a gift.

The first question you have to ask is whether the intended recipient can legally own the firearm where he or she lives.  More than 20,000 different gun laws on the books, even the kinds of firearms that law-abiding citizens can own vary from place to place; for example, juveniles (under age 18) generally speaking are precluded by law from possessing a handgun. Check out the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) website for an overview of local laws and, whatever you do, don’t forget that you can never under any circumstances transfer a firearm to someone you know or have reasonable cause to believe legally can’t own one.  That’s a federal felony, so be careful.-[source]
