Storied Carrier, ‘The Big E,’ Makes Final Voyage

When the makers of “Top Gun” were filming on board the USS Enterprise, they donated a set of black fuzzy dice to liven up the ship’s otherwise drab interior.

A quarter-century later, the dice will still be dangling inside the tower of “the Big E” as the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier sets sail on its final voyage Sunday.

The trinket is a reminder of the ship’s storied 50-year history that includes action in several wars, a prominent role in the Cuban missile crisis and serving as a spotter ship for John Glenn’s historic orbit of the earth.

“To serve on this ship, certainly in this capacity, you certainly have to be a student of the ship’s history,” said Rear Adm. Walter Carter, commander of the Enterprise strike group. “Fifty years of service, in our nation’s history, we’ve never had a warship in service that long.”

The Enterprise is the longest aircraft carrier in the U.S. fleet. It is also the oldest, a distinction that brings pride as well as plenty of headaches for the ship’s more than 4,000 crew members. The ship is effectively a small city that frequently needs repairs because of its age. It was originally designed to last 25 years, but a major overhaul in 1979 and other improvements have extended its life.

The ship largely looks like any other carrier on the inside and has modern amenities like gyms, a coffee shop and a television station with dozens of channels. It even produces its own daily newspaper while at sea.-[source]

‘Spies’ Use Bogus Facebook Account

Spies opened a fake Facebook account under the name of NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Adm. James Stavridis, and fooled senior British defense and government officials into accepting friend requests, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

The incident allowed the reportedly Chinese spies access to the personal email and contact information of some British officials, but it was unlikely any military secrets were compromised, the newspaper said.

“Discussions/chats/postings on Facebook are of course only about unclassified topics,” a NATO official said of the information that was accessed.

Adm. Stavridis leads the US European Command.

NATO officials confirmed that Stavridis had been the target of a fake Facebook profile, but they refused to speculate on the origin of the security breach.-[source]

New Bill Defends Astronauts’ Rights To Space Artifacts

The dispute over whether NASA’s early astronauts have title to the space-flown artifacts they kept as souvenirs from their missions may soon be resolved by Congress.

A bill introduced by the chairman and ranking member of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Science, Space, and Technology Committee would confirm full ownership rights to the artifacts saved, donated, or sold by astronauts who were part of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs.-[source]

M855A1:Should It Be The New Round For Soldiers & Marines?

I am not a ballistician, website like this but I know a load of crap when I see it. There are elements within the U.S. Department of Defense that have been recklessly careening down the road to an improved “green” 5.56 round for a long time. After burning through millions of dollars (at least $32 million, viagra according to the last report), it appears that they’ve finally gotten what they wanted in the M855A1.

The M855A1 EPR project has had serious issues since its inception. The problems include a lawsuit from the original designer of this round and the attendant multi-million dollar payout. In addition, there was an embarrassing revelation in 2009 that the initial bismuth alloy projectile would destabilize in higher ambient temperatures, causing it to miss the proverbial side of the barn. Great job, guys. Design a round that doesn’t work in the heat while we’re engaged against enemies operating in hot environments! Too determined to be deterred, they went back to work and “fixed” the round, leading us to where we are now.-[source]

Houston Man Claims Self-Defense In Road Rage Death

According to KHOU 11News, erectile 28-year-old Jonathan Darling claimed he acted in self-defense during an altercation that left a man dead following a traffic collision that occurred in the 8800 block of the Gulf freeway on March 5.

Per Darling, order the bumper of his vehicle collided with the bumper of another vehicle as each driver attempted to merge into the same lane.  Darling indicated that after the minor traffic collision, the driver of the other vehicle, 42-year-old Tate Welton approached and threatened him, stating “I’m going to mess you up. You messed up my day. I’m going to be late for work. We’re going to fight.”

Darling asserts that he attempted to get away from Welton and that he told his wife to call 911. However, Darling was unable to escape and Welton struck his face and head. According to Darling, Welton even went after his (Darling’s) wife and kids, who were still seated in their SUV.-[source]

Israeli Airstrikes Kill 15 Gaza Militants

Israel pounded Gaza for the second day in a row Saturday, trading airstrikes and rocket fire with Palestinian militants and killing 15 of them as the deadliest Gaza violence in over a year showed no signs of abating.

Despite Egyptian efforts to mediate a cease-fire, Palestinians fired more than 100 rockets, some striking major cities in southern Israel and seriously wounding an Israeli civilian. The military responded with more than a dozen airstrikes and the targeted killings of Palestinian militants from various Gaza organizations.

Israel’s lauded Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted more than 25 projectiles. Still, residents were told to stay close to home and the cities of Beersheba, Ashdod and Ashkelon called off school for Sunday.

Tit-for-tat exchanges between Israel and Palestinians have been routine since the 2009 war, but a flare-up of this intensity is rare. The Arab League called the Israeli attacks a “massacre.” The United Nations and the State Department condemned the violence and called on both sides to exercise restraint.-[source]

Man Accused Of Impersonating Deputy

A 34-year-old man has been accused of impersonating a police officer while at a bar in Chandler.

Last Wednesday night, hospital Matthew Gordon Williams, Jr. allegedly got into a verbal argument with another patron while at a Chandler bar.

The bartender told him she was going to call police and kept his credit card, so Williams left.

“All of a sudden his mouth started, and he was saying some very off-color things to a female patron,” says Priceless Too manager Shanna Young.

An hour later, he came back in displaying a pistol and an MCSO badge, asking for his card back.-[source]

Judge Stabbed, Deputy Shot At Washington State Courthouse

A knife-wielding attacker stabbed a judge and shot a sheriff’s deputy with her own gun in a county courthouse in Washington state on Friday, prompting a lockdown of schools and government buildings as police and SWAT teams searched for the attacker.

The gunman, described as relatively well dressed and carrying a briefcase, confronted the deputy inside the main entrance of the Grays Harbor County Courthouse in Montesano, County Undersheriff Rick Scott told a news conference.

The suspect stabbed the deputy, then grabbed her gun and shot her, Scott said.

The judge, who saw the commotion from the third floor of the courthouse and ran down to intervene, was stabbed in the neck and torso during the altercation, Scott said.-[source]

Comedy Event To Fund New Bill Of Rights Monument

A new monument is coming to Wesley Bolin plaza, across from the state Capitol.

This one doesn’t honor a person or veterans of a war, but the U.S. Constitution’s Bill of Rights.

What is the Bill of Rights? The first ten amendments to the Constitution.

It guarantees, to name a few — freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, the right to bear arms, trial by jury, and so on.

This monument will be the first of its kind in the United States.

“The bill of rights is the heart of the constitution, the most important document in human history, but there’s not a single monument of it. Arizona is going to have the first,” says Chris Bliss from mybillofrights.org.-[source]
