Afghanistan: When The Moon Sets, Watch Out

Editors note: This is farther down in the article, and was posted as I read it elsewhere, visit this the beginning and ending of the article is equally interesting, and scary as well, that people living in tents can figure a way around the defenses of the most powerful country in world.-donttreadonme

By Michael Yon

Our UAVs over Afghanistan fly with their strobes flashing to avoid collisions.  If a Predator or Reaper crashes into a commercial airliner because it was flying blacked out while staring at the ground, that is a problem.  The enemy can see our UAVs from miles away.

A key realization: the enemy uses cheap night vision gear in the form of cameras that have night functions.  When our IR lasers, our IR strobes, our IR illumination or our IR spotlights are radiating, they can easily be seen using cheap digital cameras.  I recently told this to some Norwegian soldiers, who were as surprised as our soldiers to learn it.  I learned this from the enemy, not from our guys.  The Taliban even use smart phone cameras to watch for invisible lasers.  The enemy in Afghanistan has been caught using cameras for night vision.  It is just a stroke of common sense: I have been doing it for eight years since I noticed an IR laser one night in Iraq.

A Norwegian trooper explained that one dark night in Afghanistan, they got ambushed with accurate but distant machinegun fire.  When they turned off their IR strobes, the fire ended.  When they turned the IR strobes back on, the fires resumed.  When they turned them off for good, it was over.

Many of our people believe that the enemy does not use night vision.  There was a time when this was true, but the war has matured and this is now false.  If your firefly is strobing on your helmet, or if you are carrying a cracked IR chemlight, do not be surprised if you take accurate fire during a black night.  When JTACs mark targets with IR lasers, or when aircraft such as Predators lase for Hellfire shots or for target ID, they look like purple or green sunbeams through night vision optics and they are crazy bright.  You cannot miss them.-[source]

Aerosmith Leader Talks Firearms, Defending 2nd Amendment

Aerosmith leader Joe Perry fulfilled a life-long dream when he appeared on Discovery Channel’s hit series “Sons of Guns” this week, find joining Will Hayden and his team of gunsmiths to restore and repair an antique, black powder Lyle cannon owned by the rock legend.

“I was surprised that it was as real as what you see on television. It’s pretty credible,” he told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column of the experience. “Someone found these guys doing what they do. It’s a niche market, and it’s really impressive.”

But guns are nothing new for Perry, who has been collecting them for years.

“I have always been fascinated with guns. I grew up in America so granted, it is part of our heritage and it is written into the laws of how this country is run,” he said. “I’ve been fascinated with all kinds of weapons my whole life, and as I have been able to afford to acquire pieces, here and there I started to collect.”

Perry is also a self-proclaimed history buff who spends his spare time learning the ins and out of America’s weaponry culture.-[source]

Phoenix Man Videotapes Terrorist Act Testing Police

Posted on YouTube for the world and police to see — a teen dressed like a terrorist carrying a fake RPG. And the man behind this video is in big trouble with police.

It wasn’t a terrorist plot exactly, but the actions of one valley man certainly created a huge scare for the Phoenix Police department over the summer, and now an independent filmmaker faces some serious charges.

We spoke to neighbors and police about what happened and how dangerous the stunt was.

That independent filmmaker, Michael David Turley, faces four different charges including endangerment and knowingly giving false information.

Police say he never told them the true intent of his film was to test their response.

The YouTube video that has gotten more than a thousand hits speaks for itself. An alarming sight — a man wielding what appears to be a rocket propelled grenade, standing in the intersection of 33rd Avenue and Bell.-[source]

Authorities: Man Denied Food Stamps Gets Rifle Out

Authorities say a Louisiana man who got a loaded AR-15 assault rifle from his pickup truck after being turned down for disaster food stamps has been jailed.

Louisiana State Police say a claims processor in LaPlace told officers a man became irate after being denied aid Tuesday evening after recent Hurricane Isaac. They say officers providing security at the location saw the man go to his vehicle and troopers, sheriff’s deputies and national guard troops surrounded and disarmed him.

Trooper Melissa Matey says investigators also found a handgun and several loaded ammunition magazines. She says 46-year-old Mark Knight of LaPlace was booked on charges of terrorizing and aggravated assault. Bond was set at $20,000.

Knight remained jailed Thursday. A message with the public defender’s office was not immediately returned.-[source]

Fast, Furious: ‘Serious Failures’ By Justice Dept.

Republicans and Democrats are praising the long-awaited report investigating the botched 2009 “gun-walking” operation known as Fast and Furious, but not for the same reasons.

Three years ago, federal agents lost track of hundreds of weapons after launching the operation. Many of those weapons ended up in the hands of criminals, and one border patrol agent in Arizona was killed in a shootout with traffickers.

The inspector general’s report identified “serious failures” on the part of the Justice Department but cleared Attorney General Herr Erich Holder of having any knowledge of the operation.

Testifying before a House committee Thursday, Inspector General Michael Horowitz said, “There needs to be supervision; there needs to be oversight,” and such operations should be referred at the start to “the highest levels.”

Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, talked more about the case, on CBN’s Newswatch, Sept. 19.-[source]

Concealed-Carry Saves Lives, Gun Advocates Say

In the wake of mass shootings this summer, a fusillade of a different sort erupted when gun-rights advocates suggested an audience member with a concealed weapon might have saved the day.

After gunman James Holmes opened fire in a crowded Aurora, Colo., theater, killing 12 and wounding 58, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler, wondered whether an armed movie patron “could have stopped this guy more quickly.”

Later, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a staunch gun-control advocate, called Gohmert’s view “nonsensical.”

This exchange shows how far the gun debate has come since the days when it was centered on the simple question of whether firearms ownership is a Second Amendment right.

Now, in the aftermath of research suggesting state concealed-carry laws help reduce crime, gun advocates have a new mantra: Gun ownership is not only a constitutional right, it’s socially beneficial.

In Texas, this view has become as integral a part of the state’s heritage as cowboy boots, longhorns and chili.

“You cannot name a mass-shooting in this country that has occurred in a place where guns were allowed,” said former Texas legislator Suzanna Hupp, noting the Aurora theater prohibited customers from carrying guns.-[source]

Man Opens Fire In Gun Store, Gets Gunned Down

We sat down to try to think of the absolute worst locations imaginable to pull out a gun and try to shoot somebody.

  • Submarine
  • Propane tank storage facility
  • The White House
  • Spaceship
  • U.S. Marine Base
  • Krav Maga convention
  • Fireworks factory
  • Nuclear power plant
  • Gun store

Well, viagra evidently common sense isn’t quite as common as we thought. A man was shot and killed at a gun store in Indianapolis, more about Indiana, after he opened fire on a gun store clerk.

According to reports, 26-year-old Brian C. Wayner rented a gun from Don’s Gun and used it at the attached shooting range, burning through three boxes of ammo. Then, Wayner went to the restroom to wash his hands before heading to the counter to ring up the total. Bizarrely, without giving any warning or saying anything, Wayner pulled out the gun that he had rented and opened fire on Ben Chance, the clerk behind the cash register.

Chance did pretty much exactly what you would expect a gun store employee to do: he fired back. Chance proved to be the better shot, though, because the wounds he inflicted ultimately proved fatal for Wayner. Chance was later rushed to a hospital where he was placed in critical condition, but he survived treatment and is currently recovering.

Police and Don Davis, the man who owns the gun store, are trying to piece together how and why this happened. It’s clear that Wayner somehow managed to evade protocol, because it’s against store policy for customers to carry loaded guns inside the store unless they’re at the indoor range. Davis and his employees will need to tighten security, but he’s left scratching his head over Wayner’s motive. “Nothing was said (from the shooter),” Davis said, “Not one word.”-[source]

DOJ & Media Matters Coordinated Fast & Furious Reports

The Department of Justice and Media Matters corresponded and coordinated on stories about Operation Fast and Furious “gunwalking, pharmacy ” going so far as to disparage the citizen journalist who initially broke the story, Matthew Boyle of The Daily Caller reported today, citing emails obtained from a Freedom of Information Act request to determine the extent of cooperation between the government and the “progressive” advocacy group.

“The emails…often show department public affairs chief Tracy Schmaler communicating with Media Matters bloggers,” Fox News reported in a follow-up story noting the arrangement targeted administration critics. “Sometimes, the emails were in response to inquiries. Other times, Schmaler was pitching ideas, according to the Caller.”

“Nice to know the Gunwalker criminals are paying attention,” Mike Vanderboegh of Sipsey Street Irregulars observed in his response to the story, which included emails where Media Matters’ Matt Gertz told DOJ spokeswoman Tracy Schmaler that Vanderboegh was “three inches away from being an insurrectionist.”

“The revelation comes as the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is preparing to hear from DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz about his report on the gun walking scandal launched by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives,” Seattle Gun Rights Examiner Dave Workman noted.-[source]
